Petit Point got its name due to the fact that one can only recognize small dots (points) by looking at the embroidery. Almost all our articles consist of 37 by 37 stitches per inch, which amounts up to approximately 1,460 stitches per square inch. Our finest Petit Point articles have about 48 by 48 stitches, which makes roughly 2,300 stitches per square inch. Depending on the pattern, a skilled person is able to produce one square inch of the finest Petit Point embroidery in about 3 hours. Therefore, it requires about 400 work hours to produce a high quality Petit Point evening bag, including the bag frame and its assembly.
There is a substantial difference between „Needlepoint“ and „Petit Point“.
Needlepoint is stitched with thick woollen threads on large canvas, whereas Petit Point is stitched with only one thread on a fine silk gauze. For the threads we only use DMC Pearl Cotton (Mouline). Patterns for needlepoint are printed on the canvas, while Petit Point requires hand painted patterns, which are being used by the artisan to count the stitches and carry them over to the silk gauze. Common Needlepoint work has around 80 stitches per square inch, while most of our Petit Point articles have about 1,460 stitches.
There is hardly any other souvenir as typical for Vienna as Petit Point. If you have the wish to return from your holidays in Vienna with an exclusive and unique souvenir, you should consider a Petit Point as precious souvenir, especially because one might not be able to buy it anywhere else than in Vienna. A Petit Point souvenir could be a broche, pendant, pillbox, mirror, change purse or even an exclusive handbag, for perfect use at the Opera or other exceptional events. Our Petit Point pictures show floral motives or Vienna from its best side, and qualifies them as perfect souvenir for family and friends.
Petit point requires the half-cross stitch technique, which is also known as continental stitch worked out by hand on a high quality silk gauze. As nothing is printed on the silk gauze, each embroidery requires a unique hand painted pattern. Our hand painted patterns had been painted at least half a century ago and therefore they are very rare. The patterns explain for each stitch on the embroidery, how the thread should be coloured. The artisan has to count the squares on the pattern, use the right coloured thread and transfer it on to the silk gauze. As finer the silk gauze is, the smaller the complete embroidery gets, and the more stitches one can find per square inch. Petit Point embroideries, which are finer than 13 by 13 stitches per square centimetre (32 by 32 per square inch) are usually produced with the help of a magnifying glass. Each Petit Point embroidery requires an extraordinary high degree of handcraft skills, patience and a lot of time, which qualifies it as a piece of art.

When buying an embroidered souvenir from Vienna be aware that there is a substantial difference between Petit Point and Needlepoint or Goblin. Petit Point is stitched only with one thread of DMC mouline on very fine silk gauze, which has no pre-printed design on it. Therefore hand painted patterns are required from which the embroiderer has to count the stitches, find the right coloured thread and make the stitch. Needlepoint uses the same half cross stitch technique, but thick woollen threads on a much larger canvas with pre-printed design on it are being used. Petit Point has up to 20 times more stitches than needlepoint – a difference that of course one will notice at first sight.
